Northern Canada has one of the world’s largest MicroGrid installations. Scattered across the country are small communities, camps, and lodges all dependent upon their source of power. Typically, they have relied on diesel powered generators to keep their electricity flowing. With increasing diesel costs and increased demand for greener alternatives, now is the ideal time to upgrade these installations from a single diesel generator, to a hybrid energy solution. Hybrid energy solutions reduce energy costs, while providing a greener footprint, and delivering more comfort to the residents. Simply adding battery storage allows the diesel generator to be turned off during periods of lower power consumption (eg at night) resulting in lower energy and maintenance costs. When running, the diesel generator load is optimized for maximum fuel efficiency, charging the battery with power that is not consumed on site. Additional fuel savings are realized by adding solar and/or wind power.
